Make a Vacation Out of It!

Tennessee is breathtaking and a place we believe everyone should explore. We hope you’ll consider extending your stay over the weekend to check out its amazing scenery, beautiful views, and epic trails. We have included some of our favorite cabins, hikes, and scenic landscapes.

Cabins

Our Favorites

Britney and Luke

Other Options

  • There are LOTS of options for cabins, Airbnbs, or hotels in the Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge area. The prices range from $100-$600 a night depending on size and amenities.

Hikes & Waterfalls

Hikes to Waterfalls

Laurel Falls (2.5 miles)

  • Easy hike with minimal elevation changes. One of the most popular in the park. The trail is currently closed for re-paving, but should be open before June.

Mouse Creek Falls (4.0 miles)

  • One of our favorite trails! You walk along the river the majority of the time and there are many places to pop down and dip your toes or sit on the rocks and listen to the rushing water.

Abrams Falls (5.0 miles)

  • This is a difficult hike, but totally worth it in the end. Abrams is where we took our first hike together and where we got engaged (see proposal video in Our Story).

Drive to Waterfalls

The Sinks (featured above)

  • The parking area to view the falls is along Little River Road. Look for sign post #5. Parking and falls are in a large curve.

Meigs Falls

  • The pull-off to view Meigs Falls is along Little River Road at sign post #6. Slightly tucked away and can be easy to miss from the road.

Mingo Falls (0.4 miles)

  • Mingo Falls is on the Cherokee Reservation within the Smoky Mountain National Park. It is an extremely short hike, but the majority of it is either stairs or steep uphill. There is a beautiful bridge at the top. It is a great spot for photos!

Scenic Landscapes

Day Hikes

Sugarlands Valley Trail (0.5 mile)

  • Wheelchair accessible trail. Relatively flat, paved trail.

Cucumber Gap (5.5 miles)

  • Three separate trails make up this loop. Half of the time it runs along a river, and the other half weaves through forests and wildflowers.

Clingmans Dome Trail (1 mile)

  • A moderately difficult trail. The half mile walk to Clingmans Dome is a steep, paved uphill. There are many benches along the walk for you to take a break and catch your breath. At the top, there is an observation deck that has some of the best views in the park.

Important Information

Must See Views

Newfound Gap (5,046 ft.)

  • Drive along the river to this beautiful pull off at the top of a mountain. Along the drive, there are tons of pull-off spots where we love to take photos. We took the photo above at this location.

Clingmans Dome (6,643 ft.)

  • Even if you choose not to do the trail, the drive and parking at Clingmans Dome gives you breathtaking views. It is the highest drivable place in the park. It is only open during the spring and summer months so this is the time to go check it out!

Cades Cove

  • Cades cove is a drivable loop that is completely different from the rest of the park. It is a fielded area nestled in a small valley. The area is a time capsule for Westward Expansion.

Other Options

Kayaking & Rafting

  • There are many different companies around that offer kayaking and rafting services. I have linked a few.

Swimming

  • You are allowed to swim at the park as long as there are no posted signs. Rivers can be dangerous so be safe and use caution.

Ober Tram in Gatlinburg

  • Great way to view the mountains without having to drive or hike into them.

Horseback Riding

  • There are many options for horseback riding throughout the park.

  • If you wish to park for longer than 15 minutes, you will need a parking pass. You can either buy one online or at the park. At the park, you can buy one from the Galinburg Welcome Center, Sugarland Vistor Center, Great Smokies Welcome Center, Cades Cove Visitor Center, and many more.

  • The best entrance for the park is through Gatlinburg. Once inside the park, the roads are winding and steep. Since it will be summer, there should be no chance of ice or snow. While at the park, there is little to no service so GPS rarely works. We HIGHLY recommend you either print out directions before or stop by the Gatlinburg Welcome Center to pick up some maps. You will not regain service until after exiting the park.
